Expansion Plans!

Please read about our exciting expansion plans in the News section

Our charity is set up to not only help disadvantaged and low income families, but any member of the public who may wish to find and negotiate a bargain. They collect (totally free of charge) repair and reuse household furniture and electrical appliances which would otherwise go into landfill and make available thousands of items of furniture every year to people from the region. They are widely recognised for their green ethic and helped save 150 tonnes of items from entering landfill over the last year!

CDFHS has been steadily expanding and improving and is now seeing over 2,000 people per month visiting their showrooms. They accept anything and everything for the home from 3 piece suites and washing machines to pots, pans and garden equipment.

If you have anything around your home that you don’t want anymore but feel someone else could get some good use from then contact them today! To enable them to help and support those in need, they must in turn rely on the generosity and support of the local community.

If you are able to help or would like to find out more, please telephone them on 01388 721509.

Showroom Changes!

Following the recent bank holiday weekends we've been making improvements to our two showrooms. New lighting and steel shelving have been installed, and we've revised the layout and had a good tidy  to display of our vast range of low cost household goods even better!  The offices have had a makeover with newer furniture acquired through one of our kind donors, and we'd like to thank our customers for their patience over this period.

How we're changing

CDFHS has been steadily expanding and improving its service since being registered with the Charity Commission in 2004. This expansion has accelerated recently to meet the additional demands placed on it due to the recent recession. We are seeing over 2,000 people per month visiting our showrooms on Chilton Industrial Estate. We now keep arguably the widest range of reusable furniture and household goods in County Durham. We as a charity are set up not only to help the disadvantaged and low income families, but any member of the public who may wish to find and negotiate a bargain.

Anyone can visit us get help in the form of the essentials to start a home or to buy a reasonably priced replacement for a used or broken electrical item - that we will often deliver on a next day basis to your door.

A big thankyou

To be able to help, we rely on the support of some VIPs that we'd like to thank:

Our Donors

We rely on the generosity of the residents of County Durham who have surplus or unwanted items particularly beds, cookers washing machines or sofas to donate. Without them we couldn't help anyone

Our Volunteers

Our volunteer run call centre will arrange an appointment to arrange A FREE COLLECTION of unwanted and reusable items from your door. The crew of one of our fleet of modern and reliable vehicles carry photo identification and will remove any item you wish us to take as long as it is clean, reusable and in the case of "soft items" carries the relevant fire safety label.

Despite all our changes and expansion, we have retained all our core volunteers who continue to support us in our work.

Durham County Council

We all know the financial pressures facing Councils, and the media are quick to blame them for everything from refuse collection to care home closures, so we are particularly greatful to Durham County Council for the support that they give us. The reuse credits we receive are increasing in line with our increase in volume and turnover, and this has enabled us to deliver our expansion plans.

The County Durham Furniture Help Scheme is a registered charity which supports the local community.

Who can we help - quite simply people like YOU!!!
